The project began with extensive site assessment and feasibility work identifying Dâures Constituency as one of Southern Africa's most technically and economically suited locations for green hydrogen production. An independent Pre-Feasibility Study completed by Fichtner International in April 2024 confirmed the commercial viability of the Phase 2 concept.
Before scaling to commercial production, the technology was proven on the ground. The Phase 1 and Phase 1.5 pilot plants have been developed at the Dâures site, expected to produce Namibia’s first locally manufactured green fertiliser by the fourth quarter of 2026, generating operational data that will inform the development and optimisation of the commercial-scale project.
Funding for the pilot has been provided by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the United Kingdom Government, and Enersense Energy Namibia, with approximately USD 17.7 million mobilised to date.
The Development Funding Agreement is set for execution on 10 September 2026, formally launching the commercial development phase.
Over the next 18 months the project will complete its Engineering studies, environmental assessments, procurement of key technical advisors and secure its financing, working towards a Final Investment Decision in June 2028 and Commercial Operations in March 2030.
